South Bend - Bernard B. Williams, 91, passed away at 11:45am on Wednesday, January 26, 2011 in Cardinal Nursing Home. Bernard Burdell Williams was born in Johnson Township, Walkerton, IN on September 12, 1919. He was the first of eight children of John and Bertha Williams. He was a graduate of Walkerton High School in 1939. His mother passed away at a very young age when his "baby" sister Emilie was 2. He was part owner of the J.B. Williams & Sons Packing Plant until it's closing in 1968. His experience for selling started when he was 12, selling meat from the packing plant in LaPorte, IN. After the packing plant closed, he took a job with Bankers Advertising of Iowa City, Iowa. He loved his work and never wanted to retire. He loved selling especially to the Amish people and won many awards for his achievements.
In 1981, he married Geraldine Kopinski of South Bend and they traveled to all 50 States as well as Canada, the British Isles and many countries in Europe, Africa and Mexico. Bernie was a veteran of WWII serving for over 5 years mostly in the South Pacific. He was a member of the Walkerton and South Bend Historical Society, Moose Lodge of Plymouth, the American Legion and VFW. Besides his wife "Jerry" he leaves a daughter, Nancy Williams; a son, Carl Williams; grandson, Chris; and great-grandson, Cameron of South Bend; as well as two step-daughters, Trish Long of Highlands Ranch, CO and Sharon Emerson of Aurora, Co; four step-grandsons, Chris Long, and Brian Bradley both of Aurora, CO, and Graham Long of LaPorte, CO and Michael Bradley of Hartford, CT; and two step-granddaughters, Jena Long of Boulder, CO and Erica (Stefan) Litsberger and great-granddaughters, Ellie, Linnea, Tilda and Alice -of Sweden. Bernie's parents preceded him in death as well as 2 sisters, Henrietta Hove of Fosston, MN and Huldah Ross of Dallas, TX; two brothers survive, George Williams of Hamlet, IN and Roy Williams of Walkerton, IN and sisters, Maxine Hochstetler of Bremen, IN and Emilie Kollar of Lakeville, IN.
Visitation will be from 2:00pm to 5:00pm on Sunday, January 30, 2011 in ST JOSEPH FUNERAL HOME, 824 S. Mayflower Road, where a Rosary will be prayed at 4:30 pm. A Funeral Service will be celebrated at 1:00pm on Monday, January 31, 2011 in the Funeral Home. Burial will take place at a later date in Woodlawn Cemetery, Walkerton, IN. In lieu of flowers it would be preferred donations to be given to the Alzheimer Association or to the donor's choice.
