David D. Towner, 93, of Granger, Indiana passed away at 7:10 a.m. Thursday, March 10, 2022, in St. Joseph Regional Medical Center. David, who was known for his quick wit and unending willingness to help anyone in need, was born on December 28, 1928, in South Bend, Indiana, to Howard and Laura (Peyla) Towner. He retired from Reinke Construction Company. One of his many construction projects was the church of Christ the King parish, where he was a life-long member. On January 13, 1951, in St. Joseph Church, Mishawaka, Indiana he married his high school sweetheart, Doris M. Gerstbauer, who survives. David is also survived by five daughters, Barbara (Herbert) Otten of Louisville, Tennessee, Nancy (William) Howes of Hurricane, West Virginia, Marcia (Anthony) Smith of South Bend, Indiana, Ernastine (Ralph) Saile of Mesa, Arizona and Joanne (Stuart) Owsley of Arlington, Washington; two sons, Gregory (Kathleen) Towner of Granger, Indiana and David (Janee) Towner of Bristol, Indiana; 20 grandchildren; 27 great-grandchildren; his sister, Judith Miller of South Bend, Indiana and his sister-in-law, Mary Towner of Mishawaka, Indiana. David was preceded in death by his brothers Robert Towner, Richard Towner, and Gerald Towner. A Mass of Christian Burial will be celebrated at 11:00 a.m. Wednesday, March 16, 2022, at Christ the King Catholic Church. Burial will follow in Highland Cemetery, where members of the United States Army will conduct Military Services. A visitation will be held from 4:00 p.m. until 8:00 p.m. Tuesday in the Kaniewski Funeral Home, 3545 N. Bendix Drive, where a rosary will be prayed at 8:00 p.m. There will also be a visitation from 10:00 a.m. until 10:45 a.m. Wednesday in Christ the King Church. David attended the University of Notre Dame and was forever a fan of the Fighting Irish. David served in the United States Army during the Korean War. He was also a Past Grand Knight of the Knights of Columbus Santa Maria Council #553 and the Fr. J.A. Nieuwland Assembly 4th Degree.
