WAKARUSA, IN - Winfred “Windy” Hunsberger, age 94, of Wakarusa, died at 10:30 pm, Friday, December 7, 2018 at his residence. He was born February 6, 1924 in Wakarusa to Clem and Maude (Schalliol) Hunsberger. Mr. Hunsberger grew up on a farm northwest of Wakarusa and lived in Wakarusa all of his life. He was a 1942 graduate of Wakarusa High School. He served as president and was valedictorian of his class. He attended Goshen College until he was drafted into the Army during WWII. During the service, he spent time in France. On December 9, 1944, he married Virginia Lee Yoder. Windy worked at Yoder Brothers Hardware & Furniture for 50 years. He was a member of the Wakarusa American Legion Post #307 for over 65 years and served as finance officer for many years. He was a 45-year volunteer on the Wakarusa Fire Dept. Windy was an avid bowler and sports fan. He attended Wakarusa United Methodist Church. Surviving is his wife, Virginia; children, Steve (Jackie) Hunsberger, Trudy (Dick) Holdeman, both of Wakarusa, and Doug Hunsberger of Apopka, FL; grandchildren, Heather (Ken) Bontrager, Jill (Jeremy) Tyler, Lori (Ben) Hahn, Kristi (Steve) Gall, Justin (Jessica) Hunsberger, and Megan Hunsberger; 11 great-grandchildren; and sisters, Starley Morrison of Maryland and Margaret Kenega of Elkhart. He was preceded in death by his parents; daughter-in-law, Lisa Hunsberger; brother, Robert Hunsberger; sisters, Lois Turnock and Nancy Ummel; and great-granddaughter, Annalise Hunsberger. Family and friends may call from 3-7, Thursday, December 13 at Thompson-Lengacher & Yoder Funeral Home, Wakarusa. Funeral Services will begin at 11:00 am, Friday, December 14 at the funeral home. Rev. Ed Geleske will officiate and burial will be in Olive West Cemetery, with Military graveside services.
Memorial contributions may be given to Wakarusa United Methodist Church or Wakarusa Fire Dept.
