SOUTH BEND, IN - Joanne M. Van Avermaete, 82, of South Bend, IN, passed away on Sunday, January 24, 2021. Joanne was born on May 29, 1938, in Sheboygan, WI, to the late Anthony and Antonia (Stein) Van De Loo. From age five, Joanne was a resident of this area. She graduated from Mishawaka High School in 1956. On May 23, 1959, Joanne married Richard “Dick” Van Avermaete in Mishawaka. Joanne spent more than 30 years as the parish secretary for St. Joseph Church in Mishawaka. Joanne is survived by her son, Brian Van Avermaete (Denise) of Hudson, OH; daughter-in-law, Sandra Van Avermaete of South Bend; daughter, Suzanne Moltzen (Rich) of Marietta, GA; and son, Christopher Van Avermaete (Kelly) of Evanston, IL. She also leaves behind her grandchildren to cherish memories: Brandon (Kristina) Van Avermaete, Matthew (Charlotte) Van Avermaete, Ashley Van Avermaete, Anthony Van Avermaete, Amy Van Avermaete, Anna Van Avermaete, Lily Van Avermaete, and Henry Van Avermaete. Joanne is preceded in death by her husband, Dick; her son, Gregg Van Avermaete; and her sister, Jeanne Lukasiak. Mass of Christian Burial will be celebrated at 12:00 PM, Thursday, January 28, 2021, in St. Matthew Cathedral, South Bend with Reverend Terry Fischer officiating. Visitation will be one hour prior to Mass at the church. Burial will follow at Fairview Cemetery in Mishawaka. Due to current public health and safety standards for COVID-19, social distancing will be enforced and masks required. For those wishing to join, a live-streamed funeral service will also be available at 12:00 pm on Thursday, January 28, 2021.
