SOUTH BEND - Ronald J. Ryback, 75, of South Bend, passed away on Saturday, August 4, 2012, in his home in South Bend. Ron was born on June 21, 1937, in South Bend, and was a lifelong resident. On June 19, 1965, he married Barbara Kazmierczak, who survives. Also surviving are his four sons, Scott (Karen) of South Bend, Doug and Chris (Soon) of Elkhart, and Greg of Pickwick Dam, TN; his six beloved grandchildren, Amy, Casey, Justin, Nyah, Jeremy and Dylan; his brother, James of South Bend; and his sister, Delores (Joseph) Kolo of South Bend; as well as many nieces and nephews. Ron was preceded in death by his parents, Leo and Martha (Niespodziany) Ryback; his brother, Leo (Marlene); and his sister, Virginia (Robert) Brambert. Ron was a lifetime photographer, having worked for Lattimer Studios, Borg-Warner Corporation, the Bendix Corporation, WSBT-TV, and finally at the South Bend Tribune, where he was named the Associated Press Photographer of the Year and the Bushemi Award as Indiana Photographer of the Year, both in 1974. Upon retirement in 1999, Ron was honored with many awards, including Honorary Deputy Sheriff of St. Joseph County, and proclaimed as a Sagamore of the Wabash by former Indiana Governor Frank O'Bannon, the highest honor that can be bestowed by the Governor to a citizen. During his career, Ron taught many, whether it be in critiquing young interns at the Tribune or in the photography classes he taught at Ivy Tech. Ron also spent many years in real estate sales, first as a Realtor and later as a Broker for Life Realty. Ron was a lover of automobiles, golf, and spending time just watching the waves while wintering in Florida. Cremation has taken place. A Mass of Christian Burial will be celebrated at 11:00 a.m. Thursday, August 9, 2012, in St. Jude Catholic Church at 19704 Johnson Road in South Bend, IN, where friends may visit with the family for one hour prior to the Mass. In lieu of flowers, memorial contributions may be made to the Center for Hospice Care, Inc., 111 Sunnybrook Court, South Bend, IN 46637; or to the American Cancer Society at P.O.
