SOUTH BEND - Michael "Mike" John Stepanek Jr. of South Bend, Indiana, died Monday, August 30, 2010, at the age of 71. Mike passed away in South Bend Memorial Hospital after an extended illness. Mike Stepanek was born on January 9, 1939, in LaPorte, Indiana, to parents, Michael J. Stepanek Sr. and Bernice Klug Stepanek. He was preceded in death by parents, and siblings, Carol Stepanek and John Stepanek. Married on May 8, 1965, to Judith Ann Babarckas at Sacred Heart Cathedral at Notre Dame, Mike and Judy just celebrated their 45th wedding anniversary. Mike graduated from Notre Dame with an Undergraduate Degree in Accounting in 1961 and from Notre Dame Law School in 1964. He graduated from LaPorte High School in 1957. Mike served four years in the U.S. Army in the Judge Advocate General Corps in Fort Sheridan/Chicago, Illinois, and Fort Huachuca, Arizona. Mike and Judy then moved back to South Bend where he worked at Bendix as a corporate attorney. He retired from Bendix/Allied Signal and went into private practice in Environmental Law for the remainder of this career. As a member of the Morris Park Country Club, Mike served as president for two terms. When he wasn't golfing or cheering for the ND Irish or Chicago Bears, Mike loved wood-working. He was a member of St. Matthew's Catholic Cathedral in South Bend. Mike is survived by his wife, Judy, and children, Michele Stepanek Teague (husband, Jeff Teague) and Patrick Stepanek (wife, Mindy Stallsmith Stepanek). He had five grandchildren, Megan, Ryan, Lauren, Nicholas and Jacob. Visitation will be held in the Palmer Funeral Home - Guisinger Chapel, 3718 S. Michigan St., South Bend, today, September 2nd, from 4-8 PM -- Rosary at 4:15 PM. A funeral Mass will be celebrated at St. Matthew's Catholic Cathedral on Friday, September 3rd, at 10 AM. Mike will then be interred in Our Lady of Sorrows at Cedar Grove Cemetery Mausoleum on the campus of the University of Notre Dame. The family requests that expressions of sympathy take the form of contributions to the Bishop Crowley Children's Scholarship Fund in memory of Mike Stepanek Jr. at St. Matthew's Cathedral, 1701 Miami Street, South Bend, IN 46613. Mr. Stepanek is survived by his wife, Judy Ann; daughter, Michele (Jeff) Teague of Zionsville, IN; son, Patrick (Mindy) Stepanek of Buchanan; five grandchildren, Megan, Ryan, Lauren, Nicholas, and Jacob. Funeral services will be held at 10 a.m. Friday, in St. Matthew Cathedral. Friends visited with the family Thursday in the Palmer Funeral Home-Guisinger Chapel, 3718 S. Michigan St. South Bend.
