MARY BIRDER
Feb. 2, 1930 - Nov. 25, 2008
SOUTH BEND - Mary Birder, 78 years young, passed away peacefully on November 25th, surrounded by her loving family. Mary was born on February 2, 1930, in South Bend, Indiana, to Anna and Andrew Barany, who preceded her in death, as did an infant sister, Anne, her brothers Andrew, Ernest and John, and her sisters-in-law Joan and Sue Barany, Joan Michel and brother-in-law Ted Michel. On February 11, 1950 in South Bend, Indiana, Mary married Dudley D. Birder who with their six children survive her. Her devoted children include James Patrick Birder, Iowa City, Iowa; John Damian (Linda) Birder and their sons Andrew, Michael (Mary) and Patrick of Green Bay; Dudley Damian Jr. (Carla Kimps) Birder of St. Augustine, Florida and his daughter, Crescence Marie of Rancho Santa Fe, California; Mary Alicia (Paul) Bakken and their daughters, Mari Alta and Ana Lissa of Jupiter, Florida; Mary Joan (Michael) Gilliam and their children O'Reilly and Mary Delaney of Green Bay; and Mary Crescence Stafford and her sons, Stephen, Connor and Davis of Washington, D.C. Sheis also survived by one sister, Anne (James) Monserez and one brother, Emery (Jean) Barany of South Bend, Indiana and two step-grandsons, Chris Gilliam of Seattle, Washington and Nick Gilliam of Gainesville, Florida. Also surviving her is a sister- in-law, Mary Terese (Pat) Casey of West St. Paul, Minnesota and many loving godchildren, nieces and nephews. Mary graduated from the former St. Joseph Academy in South Bend, Indiana and attended St. Mary's College, Notre Dame, Indiana and St. Norbert College, De Pere. In 2001 Mary was named an Honorary Alumnus of St. Norbert College. In 1962, with her husband, Dudley and the late Bette Hayes, Mary founded St. Norbert College Music Theatre which is now entering its 48th year. Her devotion to and support of her husband was immeasurable and her children and grandchildren were pure joy for her. Mary's interest in civic causes led to her service on numerous boards, including the Brown County Historical Society, Family Service and United Way but it was Music Theatre to which she devoted her greatest services.Services were held at Old Saint Joseph Church at St. Norbert College in De Pere. Interment will be in Allouez Catholic Cemetery, Green Bay. In lieu of flowers, memorials to the St. Norbert College Music Theatre Endowment would be appreciated. The family would like to thank their loving relatives and cherished friends for their support. They would also like to thank Tracy Hunter and Sonya Kuehl for their loving care of Mary while at St. Vincent Hospital. To express an online condolence, visit www.schauer schumacherfuneralhome.com.
