Alex Kobek, 82, of South Bend, Ind., passed away on Monday, Sept. 6, in his residence. Alex was born on June 20, 1922, in Hardburly, Ky., to the late Michael and Helen Kobek. On May 9, 1942, in St. Patrick Catholic Church, South Bend, he married Armida Colza, who preceded him in death on July 22, 2004. Along with his wife and parents, he was preceded in death by three sisters, Mary, Pauline and Jenny; a brother, Walter; and by a grandson, Alex A. Kobek Jr. Mr. Kobek is survived by his children, Armida (Harvey) Stauffer of South Bend, Alex A. (Suzanne) Kobek of South Bend, Kenneth A. Kobek of South Bend, Robert A. (Lisa) Kobek of Indianapolis, Ind., Dante J. (Theresa) Kobek of South Bend and Edward M. (Andrea) Kobek of Granger, Ind.; nine grandchildren and two great-grandchildren; a sister, Helen Toth of South Bend; and a brother, Michael Kobek of Clearwater, Fla. Alex owned and operated Indiana Floral in South Bend with his wife Armida for 20 years. He retired from American Express in 1995 after serving 26 years as a financial advisor. Mr. Kobek was a Golden Glove Boxer, a United States Navy veteran, and was a member of American Legion Post #50, South Bend. He was also a member of the Knights of Columbus, Santa Maria Council 4th degree #553, The Assemblers Dance Club, The University Club of Notre Dame, St. John the Baptist Catholic Church, where he served as an usher, and was a Gold Cap Supervisor at Notre Dame football games. Alex loved to dance with his wife Armida, and was very proud of his family. Visitation will be from 4 to 8 p.m. today, Sept. 9, in the Kaniewski Funeral Home, 3545 N. Bendix Drive, South Bend, where the Knights of Columbus will recite a Rosary at 7 p.m. A Mass Christian Burial will be held at 10 a.m. Friday, Sept. 10, in St. John the Baptist Catholic Church, 3526 St. John Way, South Bend, with burial to follow at Highland Cemetery, South Bend.
