Katherine (Kay) M. Kirwan, age 95, passed peacefully in her sleep on Monday, March 7, 2016. Kay was born September 12, 1920 in Renovo, PA, to Andrew and Anne Burosky. She spent her early years in Youngstown, OH, before going to work at the Interstate Commerce Commission in Washington, D.C., then at the Immigration and Naturalization Services as an interpreter, before moving back to Youngstown, OH, with the Internal Revenue Service. Kay married Joseph (Joe) Kirwan, of Wilkes-Barre, PA, in Youngstown, OH, on May 27, 1946. After fifty-eight years of marriage, he preceded her on July 8, 2004. Her son, James also preceded her on December 22, 1988. Kay and her family moved to South Bend, IN in 1960, and she lived there the remainder of her years. She attended St. Jude Catholic Church and volunteered at St. Jude, St. Vincent de Paul Society, Logan Community Services and Ridgedale Nursing Home. She enjoyed bowling, the company of her children and grandchildren, cooking, baking, traveling and playing bridge. Kay is survived by her children; Kathleen (Keary) Kensinger, San Francisco, CA, Daniel (Margaret) Kirwan of Bloomington, IN, John Kirwan of South Bend, IN, Michael (Laura) Kirwan of Greenville, SC, Timothy (Karen) Kirwan of Seattle, WA, Patrick Kirwan of South Bend, IN and Sally (John) Dorsey of Deerfield, IL. She is also survived by her grandchildren; Astrid Kensinger, Derek Kensinger, Nathan Kensinger, Shaun Kirwan, Amanda Barrett, Katie Dorsey and Annie Dorsey. She is also survived by her great grandchildren; Kaatje Al Mkhlaafy, Jayden Kirwan and Peyton Kirwan.
Funeral services will be held at 1:00 p.m. Thursday, March 10, 2016 at St. Jude Catholic Church, 19704 Johnson Road, South Bend, IN. Friends may visit with the family one hour prior to the services. Cremation will follow the services with burial at Southlawn Cemetery, South Bend. Palmer Funeral Home-Guisinger Chapel and Southlawn Cremation Services are assisting the family.
