He was the oldest son of Chester and Josephine Sniegowski (nee Szymanowski) and brother to Loretta Schwind (nee Sniegowski) and Robert Sniegowski. He married Barbara Sniegowski (nee Nowakowski) in 1958. Don attended Central Catholic High School in Toledo, Ohio where he was valedictorian, received his undergraduate degree from the University of Notre Dame, and his doctoral degree from Yale University. In 1956 he studied at Oxford as a Rhodes Scholar. His career was spent as an English professor at the University of Notre Dame, where he won the Thomas Madden and Charles Sheedy Awards for Teaching. He also served as Assistant Dean for the College of Arts and Letters. His academic expertise and interests included nineteenth-century Victorian poetry and African literature. He was known to students and colleagues alike as the epitome of an informed, intelligent, engaging teacher and life-long mentor.
