SOUTH BEND - Anna Pontius, 95, passed away Sunday, January 24, 2021 at St. Paul’s Retirement Center from complications due to Covid-19. She moved to South Bend in 2017, but spent most of her life in Louisville, Ohio. Anna was born July 16, 1925 in Middlebranch, Ohio, to Anthony and Carmina (Girardi) Janello. She attended Marlington High School, graduating in 1944. She loved sports and was on the girls’ basketball team; and in her senior year she was on the school paper and yearbook staffs. On January 25, 1947 Anna married Warren Pontius at The Little Flower Church in Middlebranch, Ohio; Warren preceded her in death on July 27, 2006. Anna worked for The Hoover Company for 13 years. She was an active member of St. Louis Catholic Church, a member of St. Ann’s Alter and Rosary Society, and participated in the St. Louis Church Festival and various other church and school events. She was a member of the American Legion Auxiliary Post 548, and served as president, as well as annual Veterans and Memorial Day ceremonies. She baked and cooked for Legion and Auxiliary meetings and events. Her pies were legendary! She was a member of the VFW and Eagles Club auxiliaries. Anna, with her Co-Leader (and friend of many years), Liz Paquelet, was a Brownie and Girl Scout leader. One of the troupe’s highlights was a trip to Washington, D.C. for a tour of the capitol. Anna enjoyed playing cards, bowling, gardening, sports, and golf (she was very proud of her two holes in one) and participated in the Senior Olympics. Surviving her are three daughters, Karen Pontius of New York, NY; Joyce Pontius of Oak Park, Il; and Sharon (Michael) Corley of Louisville, Ohio. Also surviving is a granddaughter, Heather (Craig) Breinig and five great-grandsons, Eddie Budinski, Alex Budinski, Isaac Budinski, Nathan Breinig, and Nick Breinig. She was preceded in death by her parents; a sister, Ruby Mastri; and three brothers, Prosby, Leonard and Charles Janello.Anna will be laid to rest in the spring next to her late husband, Warren, at Saint Louis Cemetery in Louisville, Ohio.
