SOUTH BEND - Hazel Bagnara, age 85, of South Bend, IN, went home to be with her Lord on Monday, October 12, 2015, at Memorial Hospital, South Bend, IN. Hazel was born in Lincoln Park, Michigan, to Charles and Charlotte (Metzger) Starkweather, who preceded her in death. She was also preceded in death by her sister, Lucille Alexander, and two brothers, Albert and Duane Starkweather. Hazel is survived by her husband of 66 years, Eugene "Gene" J. Bagnara; daughter, Pamela (Steve) Zielinski, Portland, IN; son, Mark Bagnara, South Bend, IN; granddaughters, Stacey Lotz and Nicole Bagnara; great-grand-daughter, Amber Lotz; sister, Joan (Ken) Holloway; and sisters-in-law, Rita Starkweather and E. Elva Gable. Hazel graduated from Mishawaka High School in June 1948 where she was a cheerleader. A year later, on June 11, 1949, she and Gene Bagnara, who she first met at Main Junior High School in the 7th grade, were married in the First Methodist Church, Mishawaka, IN. Hazel and Gene enjoyed dancing. Hazel was a ballroom dance instructor for Arthur Murray Dance Studio and performed dance exhibitions in the Michiana area. They traveled extensively for pleasure through the years. They lived in several states as a result of Gene's employment. Hazel enjoyed dancing, cooking, entertaining, gardening and sewing. She was co-owner with Gene of Jeno's Ristorante in Mishawaka, IN. Hazel requested that her body be donated to The Anatomical Education Program of the Indiana University School of Medicine, Indianapolis, IN. There will be a Celebration of Life for Hazel at Deer Run Church of Christ, 2730 S. Ironwood Dr., South Bend, IN, where she was a longtime member on Saturday, October 17, 2015, at 12 noon.
