I think I have made a connection to some of the South Bend
Lewandowskis. I believe that Michael Lewandowski, born 1865 and died
1941 and buried in St. Joseph Cemetery, was the younger brother of my
ancestor Martin Lewandowski of Bedzitowo, pow Inowroclawski, PL and
Scranton, PA. Michael was witness for Martin's 1885 marriage to
Catherine Fertner in Poland and later he and Anastasia were godparents
to several of Martin and Catherine's children (I have copies of the
baptismal records from Sacred Heart Catholic Church in Scranton). I
see from Mrs. Ladewski's files that Michael and Anastasia's daughter
Mary was born in Scranton in 1899 -- Michael is listed in the Scranton
city directory that same year. Also, my father clearly remembers
having meeting Lewandowski cousins from South Bend visiting Scranton
on at least two occasions in the 1930s and 40s (we have a family photo
of an unidentified fellow in a car with an Indiana license plate,
circa 1930). I am positive that my collateral ancestor Michael
Lewandowski is the same man who died in South Bend in 1941, and would
be happy to share my information with you if you are interested?
