SOUTH BEND - Edwin Dzierla, 84, of Greenleaf Lane, South Bend, Ind., died at 7:12 p.m. on Wednesday, March 4, in his residence. He was born on Feb. 1, 1914, in Shamokin, Pa., and lived in this area most of his life. He retired from the Bendix Corporation as an engineer. Mr. Dzierla was instrumental in changing tool and die equipment and operations of the firm. 54 percent of his ideas were adopted and placed into practice. He was a recipient of many rewards for his ideas. He was married on Aug. 16, 1958, to Louise Mankowski, who survives. He is also survived by a son, James (Susan) Mankowski of Florida; two grandchildren, Gail (George) Harley of Arkansas and James Mankowski, Jr., of Clinton, Iowa; five great-grandchildren; four sisters, Laura Szmyd of Illinois, Clarice Jarvis of Virginia, Angeline Michalak of Granger, Ind., Emily Cwidak of South Bend; and by two brothers, Daniel Dzierla of Mishawaka, Ind., and John Dzierla of South Bend. He was preceded in death by a brother, Frank Dzierla, Jr. Mr. Dzierla was a veteran of World War II, a lifetime member of Veteran of Foreign War Post 8748, American Legion Pulaski Post 357, U.A.W. Local 9, the Holy Name Society and the Golden Cluster, both of St. Hedwig Catholic Church, and the Harvest House of St. Adalbert Catholic Church. Friends may call from 2 p.m. to 8 p.m. on Sunday in the St. Joseph Funeral Home, 824 S. Mayflower Road, where a Rosary will be said at 4 p.m. Services will be at 10 a.m. on Monday at St. Adalbert Catholic Church, where he was a member. Entombment will follow in St. Joseph Cemetery. Memorial contributions may be made to the St. Adalbert Catholic Church Restoration Fund or to Hospice of St. Joseph County, 111 Sunnybrook Court, South Bend, IN 46637.
