[N11179] Early Polish settlers apparently came to South Bend as railroad section hands, stopping at the city's factories. When Anton Schybowicz (Szybowicz) filed his declaration of intention to become an American citizen in April 1868, there were approximately fifteen Polish families in South Bend5. Within two years this number increased fivefold.......Antony will marry Jozefa Rosek at St Patricks Church on July 22, 1873

South Bend Weekly Tribune, Sat., July 17, 1897, p. 6:
Antoni Szybowicz died Monday morning at his residence, 207 South Walnut street, after an illness of about three weeks. The funeral was held at St. Hedwige’s church this morning, Rev. Father Czyzewski officiating. The service, which was very impressive, was attended by a large number of relatives and friends. The remains were placed at rest in Cedar Grove cemetery.“Antoni Szybowicz was born in Poland about 65 years ago. He came to South Bend some 30 or 35 years ago being a member of the first colony of Polish people to settle in this city. For years he was employed by the Studebaker Bros. Manufacturing company and later by the Oliver Chilled Plow works. He retired years ago. Mr. Szybowicz leaves a wife and eight children, two being married."
