Leonard Borlik
Nov. 1, 1922 - June 13, 2014
SOUTH BEND - Leonard Borlik, 91, of West Ford Street, died 3:30 p.m. Friday at Memorial Hospital after a short illness. He was born Nov. 1, 1922, in Crumstown, to the late Steven and Anna (Makielski) Borlik. He married Mary Galeziewski on June 10, 1948, at St. Adalbert Catholic Church. She died in March 1996. Also preceding him were three sisters, Evelyn Strootbandt, Margaret Marshall, and Henrietta Bilinski, and two brothers, Joseph and Edward. Leonard (Len to some, Leo to others) is survived by a son, Gregory (Dorothy) of South Bend, a daughter, Bonnie Borlik of South Bend, a special daughter, Annie Kleva (Marty) of Eau Claire, MI, and four grandchildren, Doreen Borlik of South Bend, Sarah Thompson Booher (Douglas) of Bloomimgton, IN, Rebecca Thompson Boyle (Ryan) of Indianapolis and Lt. Cmdr. Joshua Thompson (Jennifer) of Rochester, NY; and a great- granddaughter, Emma Booher. He is also survived by brother, Stanley of South Bend and numerous nieces and nephews who have stepped up over the years to help. Nephew Carl Whitaker and niece Kathy Borlik, both of South Bend, had been involved in care and assistance in the past year. Leonard is also survived by his faithful dog, Hope. As a lifetime area resident, he graduated from Greene Township high school in 1939. He served in World War II in the Navy in the Pacific and later with a transport ship between New York and England. He was honorably discharged in 1946. Following the service he worked at Studebaker's, South Bend Country Club, and in various building maintenance jobs. He retired in 1984 as the buildings superintendent for Tower Federal Savings and Loan. Leonard was a member of St. Hedwig Catholic Church, St. Joseph Young Men's Society, and the Holy Name Society. He was a former member of the Ushers Club, the Golden Cluster and the Kiwanis Club. He was a lifetime sports fan. He especially loved the Cubs, Blackhawks, Notre Dame hockey and Notre Dame women's basketball. A good day for him was a ride out to Crumstown, ice cream in North Liberty, or lunch in LaPorte. Always hardworking and fun to be around, he adored his grandchildren and missed them dearly. He was the family philosopher who could put everything in perspective with a remark. Visitation for Leonard will be from 4:00 pm to 8:00 pm, Tuesday, June 17, 2014 in ST. JOSEPH FUNERAL HOME, 824 S. Mayflower Rd., where a Rosary will be prayed at 5:30 PM. A Mass of Christian Burial will be celebrated at 10:00 A.M., Wednesday, June 18, 2014 in St. Hedwig Catholic Church with visitation at the church one hour prior to the service. Burial will follow at St. Joseph Cemetery. Memorial contributions may be made to the Humane Society, 2506 Grape Road, Mishawaka, IN 46545 or St. Hedwig Catholic Church, 331 S. Scott St., South Bend, IN 46601. Condolences for the family may be made at www.sjfh.net. Published in South Bend Tribune on June 15, 2014
