SOUTH BEND - Rita Alice Skierkowski, 87, of South Bend, IN, passed away on Sunday, February 13, 2011. Rita was born August 4, 1923, in South Bend, IN, to Vincent and Elizabeth (Kujawski) Mnichowski. On February 12, 1946, Rita married Theodore Skierkowski, who preceded her in death on February 26, 1990. Surviving are nieces, Elizabeth (Raymond) Irby of South Bend, Indiana, and Deborah Brown of Virginia; and a sister-in-law, Lucille Mnichowski of South Bend, Indiana. Her daughter, Janice Kay Cypher, preceded her in death on September 8, 1993. Brothers, Ervin H. Mnichowski and Robert F. Mnichowski, and a nephew, William Mnichowski, also preceded her in death. Rita was a member of St. Matthew Cathedral Catholic Church in South Bend, was an avid reader, and enjoyed her time at the Sanctuary at St. Paul's where she had many friends and loved playing bingo. A Mass of Christian Burial will be celebrated at 10 a.m. Saturday, February 19, 2011, in St. Matthew Cathedral Catholic Church, where friends may call one hour prior to the Mass. Burial will follow at St. Joseph Valley Memorial Park, Granger. In lieu of flowers, memorial contributions may be made to the Center for Hospice and Palliative Care, 111 Sunnybrook Court, South Bend, IN 46637.
