SOUTH BEND - Gene passed away on Thursday, April 30, 2015, in his home at Sanctuary at St. Paul's. Gene was born November 30th, 1922, in South Bend, Indiana, to Mary & Stanley Bajdek of 727 S. Warren Street. Preceding Gene in death were his brothers, Jerome, Joseph, Leonard and John; and sisters, Ruphine (Roman) Kajzer and Mildred (Tony) Borowski. Gene is survived by younger sister, Luella (Richard) Paczkow-ski of South Bend; and numerous nieces and nephews. Gene married Ruby Davis in 1947. Ruby passed away in 1988. In 1989, Gene married Margaret (Peggy) Peterson of Goshen, Indiana. Peggy subsequently passed away in 2006. Gene honorably served in the U.S. Navy during WWII aboard the U.S.S. Blackwood, a destroyer escort as a First Class Petty Officer. Gene retired from Simon Brothers in 1984 and spent many winter months in Apache Junction, Arizona. During these winters he volunteered at the Boys & Girls Club, baseball spring games and many other local functions in Mesa, Arizona. The local and some national press will remember Gene as being in charge of feeding them in the Press Box at Notre Dame football games from 1955 to 2000. Gene also regularly gave blood and volunteered at Memorial Hospital. Gene was also employed at Singer Sewing Machine Company until it closed in South Bend in 1955; a short time social member of the St. Joseph Young Men's Society; and an usher at St. John the Baptist & Holy Family Churches. He was also a longtime member of P.N.A. 83 and American Legion Post 357. Gene had a long fruitful life and was blessed to have been loved by all who knew him. Visitation for Gene will be 10:00 am to 11:00 am Monday, May 4, 2015, in Holy Family Catholic Church. A Mass of Christian Burial will be celebrated at 11:00 am Monday, May 4, 2015, in the church. Burial will follow at St. Joseph Cemetery. In lieu of flowers, memorial contributions may be made to Holy Family Catholic Church, 56405 Mayflower Rd., South Bend, Indiana 46619; or to the donor's choice.
