SOUTH BEND - Donald Ervin Jesswein, 87, of South Bend, died at 11:41 a.m. Tuesday, January 3rd, in Memorial Hospital. Mr. Jesswein was born June 23, 1929, in South Bend, to the late Dorothy (Rozinski) and William E. Jesswein, and was a lifetime area resident. On August 6, 1950, in South Bend, he married Altha L. Milliken, who survives. Also surviving are his daughter, Pamela Schau of the Villages, FL; his sons, Donald B. Jesswein (Linda) of Mt. Airy, NC, and Brian K. Jesswein of South Bend; seven grandchildren, Amanda Vaughan, Ryan Jesswein (Erin), Allison Woodward (Eric), Braydon Thompson (Amber), Kayla Jesswein, Austin Jesswein, and Zachary Jesswein; and two great-grandchildren, Ava and Grady Vaughan. Don graduated from New Carlisle High School in 1947 and was a veteran of the U.S. Army during the Korean War. He worked in a sign shop in California at age 18 and came back to South Bend and worked at South Bend Neon for years. He then opened his own Adway Signs and then Forest Sign & Display, retiring in 2009. After retiring he worked for Teachers Credit Union and Ziker Cleaners doing signage. He loved sign work, woodworking, and basically just loved to work. He was a member of St. Joseph Lodge #45 F & AM, Scottish Rite Valley of South Bend, the VFW, a charter member of Lydick Lions Club, and a former member of Kiwanis. He was also a member of Lydick United Methodist Church and the men's prayer group of the church. Don coached at the Warren Township Little League for over 20 years. He was on the Warren Township Park Board and was involved in the construction of tennis courts and the Senior League diamond. He was also an avid bowler and along with Altha bowled at the Elks Club, in the Ma and Pa League at Beacon Bowl and with the Kiwanis Club at Chippewa Bowl.Don loved spending time at his lake cottage on Gravel Lake and wintering in Florida at Brooksville. He was an adoring family man and especially doted on his grandchildren and great-grandchildren. He will be greatly missed by all.A celebration of Don's life will be held at 3:00 p.m. Monday, January 9th, in the Welsheimer Family Funeral Home, 521 N. William St., with Mr. Mark Rydzinski officiating. Cremation will take place at Welsheimer Crematory. The family will receive friends on Monday in the funeral home from 1:00 p.m. until the time of the service. In lieu of flowers, memorial contributions may be made to Lydick United Methodist Church, 26510 Edison Rd., South Bend, IN 46628.
