SOUTH BEND - Michael J. Swartz, 56, was called home to be with the Lord at 7 a.m. on Sunday, December 6, 2009, in his home in South Bend. Mike was born on September 16, 1953, in South Bend, the eldest son of Irvin and Geraldine Caroline (Jaronik) Swartz. He was preceded in death by his mother. On September 6, 2001, in Hilltop Lutheran Church, he married Jacqueline D. (Stefan) Swartz, who survives along with their daughter, Kaylee Swartz of South Bend; and his children from a previous marriage, Christy Swartz and Jason Swartz, both of South Bend; two grandchildren, Connor Swartz and Nathaniel Curtis, both of South Bend; four sisters, Kathy (Mike) Plencner of New Carlisle, Pam (Dan) Miller of Mishawaka, Julie (Tony) Mancuso of South Bend and Lisa (Chuck Howk) Swartz of Grand Rapids, MI; five brothers, Jim Swartz, Bill (Kelly) Swartz, Jeff (Jill) Swartz, Scott (Stacey) Swartz and Tom (Kellie) Swartz, all of South Bend. He is also survived by his father, Irvin Swartz, and by numerous nieces and nephews, aunts and uncles. Michael honorably served his country in the Untied States Marine Corps from November 1, 1974, to November 20, 1978. During that time he received the Good Conduct Medal and received corporal rank. He worked at Notre Dame for 10 years in building services, Bendix for 10 years, and for the last five years has worked for Steel Warehouse. He was a parishioner of Holy Family Catholic Church and was a member of American Legion 284. Visitation will be from 2 to 8 p.m. today, December 8th, in ST. JOSEPH FUNERAL HOME, 824 S. Mayflower Road, where a Rosary will be prayed at 4:30 p.m. A Mass of Christian Burial will be celebrated at 10 a.m. on Wednesday, December 9th, in Holy Family Catholic Church. Burial will follow at St. Joseph Cemetery. Memorial contributions may be made to the Center for Hospice and Palliative Care, 111 Sunnybrook Court, South Bend, IN 46637; or to the Holy Family Catholic Church Building Fund, 56405 Mayflower Road, South Bend, IN 46619.
