Michael was born in Jaremcza, Poland. Because of shifting borders, since World War II, Jaremcza has been known as "Yaremche" and is part of Ivano-Frankivsk Oblast, a province in western Ukraine. Michael was taken into Germany by the Nazis and held as slave labor during World War II. After the war, he was in a refuge camp under the control of the U.S. Second Army. Michael left Bremerhaven, Germany, on the ship General R. M. Blatchford. On January 20, 1952, he arrived at Ellis Island, New York, with his wife, his son, and his daughter.
