Gerard “Jerry” L. Berntsen, 90, of South Bend, Indiana passed away on Thursday, February 16, 2023. He was born on December 13, 1932 in Wichita, Kansas to the late Theodore J. and Elizabeth (Ahlert) Berntsen. On April 14, 1952, Jerry married Annie “Ann” Vandermotten, who after 61 years of marriage, preceded him in death on May 23, 2013. Jerry was also preceded in death by his daughter Janice Saros in 2018. Jerry is survived by one daughter, Dr. Mary (Daniel) Olguin of Tijeras, New Mexico; two sons, Paul G. (Paula) Berntsen of Brownsburg, Indiana, Mark A. (Kristie) Berntsen of Jacksonville, Florida; one son-in-law, Daniel Saros of Mishawka, Indiana; eight grandchildren, Shaun (Andi) Armon of Fort, Collins, Colorado, Joshua (Amber) Berntsen of St. Petersburg, Florida, Elizabeth (Daniel) Rener of Atlantic Beach, Florida, Brenna Armon of Libertyville, Illinois, Allison (Derek) Hahn of San Antonio, Texas, Benjamin Berntsen of Brownsburg, Indiana, Jillian (Ryan) Bonnell of Mishawaka, Indiana and Jamie Saros of Mishawaka, Indiana; nine great-grandchildren; and dear friend Gert Brown. Jerry was an insurance agent for State Farm for thirty-eight years. He was a former member of Holy Cross Catholic Church, St. Vincent De Paul Society and a former volunteer at St. Joseph Regional Medical Center. He was on the Board of Directors for Corvilla. He was the founder of Queen of all Saints Federal Credit Union. Jerry was an active resident at St. Paul’s. He loved participating in church, the bell choir, singing, telling jokes, and calling bingo. Jerry will fondly be remembered for his jokes, crazy socks, and love for his family and God. A visitation will be held for Jerry on Tuesday. February 21, 2023 at St. Paul’s, 3602 S. Ironwood Dr. South Bend, IN from 11:00 am until 1:00 pm. A Mass of Christian Burial will be held at 1:00 pm. Cremation will follow.
