SOUTH BEND - Arthur L. Kalicki, 90, of South Bend, Indiana, passed away Saturday, October 1, 2011. Arthur was born on June 27, 1921, in South Bend, Indiana, to Leon and Josephine (Jankowski) Kalicki. He retired from the former Bendix Corporation in 1983 after 43 years of service. On April 21, 1945, Arthur married Edwardine G. Arelt, who survives. Surviving with his wife of 66 years are his sons, Craig A. (Doreen) Kalicki of Sioux City, Iowa, Duane Kalicki of South Bend, Indiana; grandchildren, Lisa (Rob) Chapman of San Mateo, California, Sarah (Brian) Archer of Colorado City, Colorado, Susan Kalicki of Omaha, Nebraska; and a sister, Martha Chrobot of South Bend, Indiana. Sisters, Leona Gorzkiewicz, Agnes Kopec, and brothers, Casimir, Albert and Richard Kalicki, all preceded him in death. Arthur was a quiet man. He was President of the Michiana Rose Society, having over 300 rose bushes at one time. He earned many trophies over the years for his roses. He loved music and recorded all the tunes from the Big Band Era, especially Fredie Martin and Jan Garber. He played the harmonica and sang; was an amateur photographer; read books every spare moment; and should have been a teacher. Arthur told his granddaughters his made-up stories, never scary ones, and received much enjoyment in doing so. He was a huge Notre Dame and Cubs fan, and loved his dog and best friend, Lady, who preceded him in death. Visitation will be held from 3-7 p.m. on Monday, October 3, 2011, in the Kaniewski Funeral Home, 3545 N. Bendix Drive, South Bend, Indiana, where a parish Rosary will be prayed at 5 p.m. A Mass of Christian Burial will be celebrated at 10 a.m. Tuesday, October 4, 2011, in Holy Cross Catholic Church, South Bend, Indiana. Entombment will follow at St. Joseph Cemetery. In lieu of flowers, memorial contributions may be made to the Purdue Cancer Center, Alzheimer's Association , the St. Joseph County Humane Society, or to the charity of the donor's choice.
