SOUTH BEND - Hilda Stalzer Bomer was born in Graz, Austria on June 17, 1943 and died In Boulder, Colorado on August 6, 2016 of complications from dementia. She was a beloved teacher of German at St. Joseph's High School in South Bend, Indiana and later at the Austrian American Institute in Vienna. She was an amazingly talented painter and had many shows in both South Bend and in Vienna, the two places she lived most of her life. In 2008, she won a National Endowment for the Humanities to translate Helena Kottanner's memoirs, which was then published by the National Museum of Women in the Arts in Washington, D.C. The book won the Museum's Library Fellows Award for 2009. Before teaching, she earned her Masters in Psychology from Notre Dame and briefly was a family counselor. She was a great friend, loved to argue left wing politics when she threw dinner parties, was the best cook, a brilliantly loving wife to her husband John Bomer, an amazing mother to her three daughters and the best grandmother to her four grandchildren. She's survived by her three daughters, Kika Dorsey, Paula Bomer and Maxine Bomer and four grandchildren, John Bomer Rockwell, Harold Stalzer Rockwell, Sam Dorsey and Eliza Dorsey.
