Gertrud Maria Schuechner, age 83, of South Bend, Indiana passed October 31, 2020, at St. Joseph Regional Medical Center, Mishawaka, Indiana. Graveside services and interment are planned for 2:00 PM on Sunday, November 15, 2020, at Rosehaven Cemetery in Douglasville, GA. No local services will be held. Gertrud was born to Karl Schimpf and Katherine Arens on February 20, 1937, in Munich, Germany. She came to Cleveland, Ohio as a young adult in search of adventure, and there she was united in marriage to Robert Conrad Schuechner, Sr. on June 8, 1963. Gertrud worked hard studying in college while raising her 2 children. She graduated from Cleveland State University with a Bachelor’s Degree in Social Work and received a Master’s Degree in Social Work (MSW) from The University of Georgia. Her career began working in disaster services with the American Red Cross while living in Ohio and at Memorial Hospital in South Bend. Gertrud loved to continue learning and was an avid reader. She enjoyed spending time with her grandchildren, shopping at the mall and watching German music shows. Those left to cherish her memory are her beloved husband of 54 years, Robert Schuechner; a son, Bob Schuechner; a daughter, Lisa Morrow Sullivan (Charlie); a sister, Elizabeth Ebersberg (Florian); three grandchildren, Max Morrow, Isabelle Morrow and Jackson Morrow; and many nieces and nephews. She was preceded in death by her parents; her aunt; and brother, John “Hansi” Arens.Palmer Funeral Home - River Park is assisting the family with arrangements in South Bend. Whitley-Garner at Rosehaven Funeral Home 8640 Rose Avenue, Douglasville, Georgia 30134 is assisting with arrangements in Georgia. In lieu of flowers, the family requests donations be made in memory of Gertrud to the American Red Cross, PO Box 37839, Boone, IA 50037-0839, www.redcross.org.
