Edward C. Sliwa Sr., 86, Michigan City, Indiana, passed away Saturday, April 9, 2011 at 5:35 a.m. in Indiana University Health La Porte Hospital. Funeral services will be held at 2 p.m. Tuesday at Ott/Haverstock Funeral Chapel, 418 Washington St., with the Deacon Daniel Bowmar officiating. Cremation will follow services and ashes interred privately in St. Stanislaus Cemetery. Visitation will be from noon until service time Tuesday at the Ott/Haverstock Funeral Chapel. He was born January 8, 1925 in Michigan City, Indiana to the late Valentine and Julie (Biernacki) Sliwa. On September 29, 1984 in Michigan City, IN he married Joan Lekarczyk who survives in Michigan City, IN. Also surviving are 2 daughters, Gwen (Mark) Gladfelter of Monmouth, IL, and Cynthia Evans of Michigan City; son, Edward C. (Jackie) Sliwa, Jr. of LaPorte, IN; step-daughter, Julie Lotesto of Evanston, IL; 2 sisters, Helen Heuer and Jeanette King, both of Michigan City, IN; 12 grandchildren and 3 great-grandchildren. He was preceded in death by daughter, Marianne Lyons; step-son, Jeffrey Ward; 2 sisters, Catherine Keen and Sophia Pahs; 3 brothers, Stanley, Valentine, and Joseph Sliwa; and a grandson. He retired as a machinist from Joy Mfg. and was a U.S. Navy Veteran of World War II. He was a member of VFW 2536, the USS LCS (L) (3) 86 and the American Legion Hamon Gray Post 83 in La Porte, IN. He was the Quartermaster for the Maple City Cadets and Past President of the La Porte P.W.P. He was an avid Notre Dame football fan who enjoyed fishing and loved his dogs.
