South Bend -- Bernice K. Staszewski, 88, of South Bend, IN, passed away surrounded by family at 5:19 p.m. Thursday, January 11, 2007, in Inwood Hills Estates. She was born on October 11, 1918 in South Bend to Frank and Josephine (Buczkowski). Her name at birth was Bronislawa Emila Kolanda. Bernice was formerly employed with the former Studebaker Corporation and Wilson Brothers.On February 20, 1943, in McComb, Mississippi, as Bernice K. Kolanda, she married Joseph Staszewski, who preceded her in death on July 21, 1989. Also preceding her in death were her sisters, Elizabeth Kolanda, Helen Kolanda, Frances Brown and Marie White. Surviving are sisters, Irene J. Wesolek of South Bend and Loretta Janowiak of Granger; and four generations of nieces and nephews. A Mass of Chirstion Burial will be at 10 a.m. Monday, January 15, 2007, in St. Stanislaus Church. Burial will follow in St. Joseph Cemetery. Friends may call from 1 until 8 p.m. on Sunday in the Kaniewski Funeral Home, 3545 N. Bendix Drive, where a parish rosary service will be held at 4:30 p.m. Bernice was a lifelong parishioner of St. Stanislaus Church. She was a member of the Rosary Society and Harvest House of St. Stanislaus Church, Harvest House of St. Anthony de Padua Church, Ladies of Charity, Circle of Mercy, and a former member of the previous Ladies West Side Democratic Club.Bernice was known lovingly to many as "Aunt Bea." Many of us will remember her for her passions in life: Baking, gardening and traveling with family. Memorial contributions may be made to the Holy Cross School Renaissande Compaign or to the Center for Hospice and Palliative Care, Inc.
