Andrew J. Nemes , 93, of Detroit Street, South Bend, Ind., passed away after an extended illness at 1:45 p.m. Sunday, Sept. 19, in Saint Joseph's Regional Medical Center, South Bend. Mr. Nemes was born on Oct. 2, 1910, in Szemplen Megya, Hungary, and had resided in the South Bend area since age two. On Jan. 28, 1939, in South Bend, he married the former Esther E. Marialke, who preceded him in death on Feb. 8, 1988. Mr. Nemes is survived by a daughter, Wanda A. Nemes of South Bend; and two brothers, Albert Nemes of Mishawaka, Ind., and Joseph Nemes of South Bend. Mr. Nemes was preceded in death by a son, Andrew G. Nemes ; four sisters, Julia, Mary, Helen and Gizella; and by a brother, George Nemes .Andrew was a member of Southlawn United Methodist Church, Eagles Lodge #435, a past member of the DAV German Club, treasurer of St. Joseph County Fire Fighters Association for 15 years, charter member of the Centre Township Fire Department where he worked for 45 years, served on the board of trustees at Southlawn Church, and was an active member of the church for 54 years. Mr. Nemes retired from Holiday Rambler and previously worked for the Studebaker Corporation for 35 years. Andrew will be sadly missed by his loving daughter and brothers along with all who knew him. He will be greatly missed by his loving church family as well. Visitation hours will be from 4 to 8 p.m. Wednesday, Sept. 22, in the Hanley & Sons "Southwest Chapel" Funeral Home, located at West Ireland Road/Indiana 23, South Bend. Funeral services will be held at 11 a.m. Thursday, Sept. 23, in Southlawn United Methodist Church, with Pastor Don Carpenter officiating. Burial to follow at Southlawn Cemetery. (Friends may call in the church one hour prior to service time on Thursday.) The family request that all memorial contributions be made to the Centre Township Fire Department or to Southlawn United Methodist Church.The HANLEY & Sons "Southwest Chapel" Funeral Home handled arrangements and services and extend deepest sympathy, at a time of great personal sorrow for the Nemes family.
