Elderly Man Shoots Wife, Then Self at Hospital, Police Say

SOUTH BEND, Ind. (AP) _ An elderly man walked into his ailing wife’s hospital room Tuesday and shot her to death, then turned the gun on himself, police said. The husband had little hope of his wife recovering from a heart attack and possible stroke and didn’t want to live alone, St. Joseph County Coroner Dr. Louis H. Grwinski said. She had been listed in critical condition. The dead were identified as John Tashijan, 81, and his wife, Nadia, 78, of Mishawaka, Ind.
″I talked to all the family,″ Grwinski said. ″They didn’t feel like John was despondent over everything. He just felt she was going to die and couldn’t take it without her. The murder-suicide happened early Tuesday morning in the cardiac care unit at St. Joseph’s Medical Center, Police Lt. Norval Williams said. Hospital workers suspected nothing when Tashijan appeared at the hospital to visit his wife, who had been hospitalized a couple of days, he said. Mrs. Tashijan was shot twice with a .38-caliber revolver, and Tashijan was shot once, Grwinski said. The couple’s daughter, who was not identified, was visiting with her father and stepped out of the room moments before the shooting, apparently unaware of Tashijan’s intentions, he said. Tashijan had suffered a heart attack in recent years but was in relatively good health, the coroner said.
