Lorraine Vera Castello
June 25, 1922 - Feb. 22, 2012
SOUTH BEND - Lorraine Vera Castello, 89, passed away peacefully Wednesday, February 22, at St. Joseph Hospital, Mishawaka, IN after a brief illness. She was surrounded by her loved ones physically, spiritually and in prayer when the Angels came to greet her. Lorraine, born June 25, 1922, was a native of Mishawaka and lived at Southfield Village for the past 5 years. She was fun-loving, outgoing and so special that there will be a void in many hearts. The memories of all the special times shared with her will remain with all of us. Each family member, friend and co-worker will fondly remember Lorraine in so many different ways. She graduated from Mishawaka High School before entering Epworth (Memorial) School of Nursing. Lorraine was a career nurse, serving as a LT in WW II. She then practiced at Ball Band (Uniroyal) until her retirement. She married her husband Ed Castello, her one and only love, and together they spent 26 wonderful years. He was a life long farmer and preceded her in death in 1995. Also preceding her in death were her parents, Paul and Juanita Maggart; her brother and sister-in-law, James and Juliette Maggart; a brother-in-law, Martin Leyner; two nieces, Darlene Maggart and Betty Rade; and two nephews, William Hoose and Bob Birk. Lorraine was a devoted member of First Methodist Church in Mishawaka. She enjoyed bowling, gambling and especially shopping. She took great pleasure in collecting music boxes, Hummels, thimbles and watches. She traveled extensively and visited many countries. Her greatest joy was spending time with her family. Although Lorraine never had children of her own, she was thought of as a mother figure by all 17 of her nieces and nephews. Surviving family members include Michael (Patricia) Maggart, Judie (Ken) Woodka, Larry Maggart, Lauretta Hoose, Carol (Gene) Trzybinski, Thomas (Nancy) Maggart, Rodger Hover, Mary (Bud) Birk, Carl (Mary Ann) Lehner, and Dorthy (Clem) Degucz. Also surviving Lorraine are her sister-in-law, Evelyn Lehner; cousin, Marge Clausen; 45 great nieces and nephews; and 62 great great nieces and nephews. Lorraine was lovingly referred to as "Aunt Norn". This endearing name was given to her by her youngest nephew Tom, as Norn was easier than Lorraine for a toddler to say. From then on, she was simply known as "Norn" by many generations, both young and old. As unique as she was, there will never be another Norn. There will never be another Lorraine who will touch our lives the way she did. We were blessed to have her share her life with us and to have made the impact she did on all our lives. Knowing her shaped who we are. She guided us with wisdom and humor and words cannot convey the extent of our love for her. Her life doesn't end at the end of this tribute. She will continue to live in the depths of our hearts where we will keep our love for her strong and hold tight to our memories of her. Aunt Norn, we thank you, we love you and we will miss you greatly! Until we meet again. Visitation will be held at Hahn Funeral Home, 505 W. 8th Street, Mishawaka Sunday, February 26 from 2-4 pm. The funeral will be held at the First Methodist Church, Mishawaka on Monday, February 27 at 11 am, with a 1 hour visitation prior in the church. She will be laid to rest next to her husband at Chapel Hill Memorial Gardens, Osceola. The family would like to extend its appreciation to the 5th floor nursing staff at St. Joe for the professional care and support they provided to Lorraine. To the staff at Southfield Village, you provided a loving and nurturing home for Lorraine and we are truly grateful. May God continue to bless you all. Memorials in Lorraine's honor may be offered to her church or to a charity of your choice .
