VALPARAISO - Joyce C. Freed, age 79, of Valparaiso, IN, formerly of the Mishawaka and South Bend area, born November 13, 1937, passed away at home surrounded by her loving family on May 25, 2017 after a battle with cancer. She is survived by her children, Sharon (Jim) Cumming of Florida, Penny (Glenn) Shank of Missouri, Ted W. Carlson III of South Bend and John W. Carlson, Sr. of Mishawaka. She is also survived by her grandchildren, Rebecca & Blake Thompson, Michael Shank, Monique (Victoria) Carlson, John Carlson, Jr., Kaley & Kyle Carlson, Teddy IV, Krystin, Rachael, & Jillian Carlson; her great-grandchildren, Cassandra, Jeremiah, Nathan, Kaylee, Laney, Mason, Kaitlyn, Jacob, Brooklyn, Casen, Hadleigh, Cameron, Teddy V, Isabella, and Canaan; her sisters, Kathleen Condon of Valparaiso and Karen (Roger) Williams of Uniontown, Ohio, and many nieces and nephews. She was preceded in death by her husband, Max Wayne Freed, her parents, Charles & Arlene Kletka, brother, Richard C. Kletka and her grandson, Ryan Carlson. Joyce was active in the Fraternal Order of Eagles Ladies #4250 Auxiliary and served as past President. She was an avid Notre Dame and Cubs fan. She liked to play darts, enjoyed crafts, and loved to crochet. In lieu of flowers, memorial donations may be made to VNA Hospice of Porter Co., 2401 Valley Dr., Valparaiso, IN 46383 and Center for Hospice & Palliative Care, 111 Sunnybrook Ct., South Bend, IN 46637. A private burial will take place on Friday, June 2, 2017. There will be a Celebration of Life for Joyce beginning at noon on Saturday, June 3, 2017 at 2928 Marrett Dr., Mishawaka, IN.
