[N3970] Rose Clara Pischalko
June 19, 1911 - Dec. 9, 2011
SOUTH BEND - Rose Clara Pischalko, 100, died Friday at 7:35 p.m. at Forest Glen Assisted Living, where she had been a resident since March 2010. She was a long-time resident of both Dowagiac and South Bend. She was born June 19, 1911, in South Bend, Indiana, to Frank J. and Rosy (Abraham) Sauer. On May 30, 1931, she married Steve J. Pischalko at Our Lady of Hungary Catholic Church in South Bend, Indiana. He preceded her in death on May 18, 1992. She is survived by her daughter, Betty Jane Horvath of Granger; her son, Steve (Joyce) Pischalko, Granger; seven grandchildren, Vickilyn (David) Fleisher, Dowagiac, Leslie Horvath, Bakersfield, CA, Donald (Kim) Horvath, Evansville, IN, Teresa (James) Savidge, Dowagiac, Michele Pischalko, Duvall, WA, Steve Pischalko, South Bend, and Melanie Pischalko, Olympia, WA; nine great-grandchildren and 29 great-great-grandchildren; along with two nephews and one niece. She worked as a seamstress at Wilson Brothers and operated a cleaning service for 1st Source Bank. In addition, she worked on the family farm in Dowagiac. She loved gardening and preserving goods, along with growing an array of flowers - she had a "green thumb." However, most important to Rose was her family. She loved being surrounded by family and friends and entertained them graciously throughout the years, always making sure there was plenty of food with her well-known invitation of "have some coffee and cake, honey." She had a quick wit, a loving smile and a twinkle in her eye. These characteristics she carried with her throughout life as she gave to others the joy of living. The family will receive friends on Monday, December 12th, from 2-4 pm and 6-8 pm at McGann Hay Funeral Home, Granger Chapel, 13260 S.R. 23 (enter off Cherry Road), where the Holy Rosary will be prayed at 7:30 pm. A Mass of Christian Burial will be celebrated on Tuesday, December 13th, at 1:00 p.m. at Christ the King Catholic Church, S.R. 933 North at Darden Road, South Bend, officiated by Rev. Neil Wack, CSC, pastor. Contributions in memory of Rose may be made to Hospice at Home, 4017 Chamberlain Road, Buchanan, MI 49017. Pischalko turning 100 on Sunday

If Cherry Grove Road seems an unusual name for the entry road to a Southwestern Michigan College campus carved out of cornfields, ask Rose C. Pischalko. Rose, turning 100 on Fathers Day, came to farm there in 1938.

In fact, she lived on the farm at the corner of M-62 and Cherry Grove until last year, according to her granddaughter, Theresa Savidge, who opened The Gift of Namaste June 1 in downtown Dowagiac. Rose, matriarch of a Hungarian clan in South Bend, Ind., where she was born, was married to Steve J. Pischalko for just shy of 62 years before he passed away on May 18, 1992. Her family includes two children, seven grandchildren, 10 great-grandchildren and 12 1/2 great-grandchildren because the birth of the 13th is expected Labor Day weekend. When we dropped in on Rose Thursday afternoon at Forest Glen Assisted Living, shed just had her hair done and not only played bingo, but won the cover-all game, thanks to good luck brought by a granddaughter visiting from Washington state. Rose can look forward to sort of a weekend doubleheader at Forest Glen, since there is a Fathers Day cookout with a tent on Saturday and her family observing her centennial on Sunday, her actual birthday (June 19, 1911). We had everything on their farm, Rose said. We had an orchard, including cherries. Birds carried the seeds and those trees came up really nice. The college wanted to buy that farm so badly, but the kids wanted to keep it in the family because they remember so much about being out there all the time. Rose was a city girl who worked in a shirt factory before settling into rural life. Other family members worked for Studebaker in South Bend. Heading for Grandmas farm became a Sunday family tradition. I enjoyed every minute of farm life, Rose said, even when the tractor didnt want to start. At Forest Glen, I try to make it to all the things I possibly can, she said. She does, agreed four-year Activities Director Corey Morrow. We go on outings. Weve been to Round Oak, to Wal-Mart shopping. She exercises and plays bingo. Shes very active more so than some of my younger residents. Just recently, shes been counseling the knitting class we just started. She and her daughter both knit.
Rose comes from a work ethic of getting the little one off to school, then go milk cows or pitching hay. In those days, a tractor might be driven by a 9-year-old girl. They wouldnt allow that today, she laughed. Theyd hang us.
