James Cecil Tom, 79, passed away Thursday, Feb. 9, at home. He was born Sept. 5, 1943 in Kosciusko County to LaVent and Edna (Cripe) Tom. On April 8, 1967 he married Linda Suter in South Bend. She survives along with two children, Julia (Casey) Miller, Goshen and Andrew (Christon) Tom, Mishawaka; four grandchildren, Hannah and Rachel Miller and Emily and Alexander Tom. Along with his parents, he was preceded in death by three sisters, Carol Mullinix and Martha and Doris Tom. Jim was a member of Mishawaka Grace Brethren Church since 2005. He enjoyed serving the church as an usher and singing in the choir. From 1967 to 1999 he had been a member of the Ireland Road Grace Brethren Church and from 2000 to 2005 he was a member of the Osceola Grace Brethren Church. He worked as a painter and finisher at South Bend Lathe before his retirement. He enjoyed woodworking and working on cars. Visitation will be Friday, Feb. 17, from 4 to 7 p.m. at Mishawaka Grace Brethren Church, 1715 E. Day Road, Mishawaka, where a 10 a.m. Saturday, Feb. 18 funeral service will be conducted. Rev. Mike Ostrander will officiate. Private burial will follow at Chapel Hill Memorial Gardens, Osceola. Memorial donations may be given to Mishawaka Grace Brethren Church. Yoder-Culp Funeral Home, Goshen, is assisting the family with arrangements.
