SOUTH BEND - South Bend - Hazel H. La Canne (nee Guldenstein), 96, born September 9, 1921 went to heaven Thursday, November 9, 2017. Hazel is survived by her husband Gerald, son Michael Piper, foster daughter Connie Renaldi, stepdaughter Sharon Darkovich, grandchildren Amy Darkovich, Michelle Wright (Anthony), Vincent (Jane) Williamson, and James Williamson; and great-grandchildren, Marrisa Renaldi, Danitza & Anthony Wright. Hazel is preceded in death by a son, Robert La Canne, Hazel led a long rich life. She was born in China Township, MI to Herman & Annie (nee Parsons) Guldenstein and grew up on a farm with three sisters and two brothers who are deceased. As a young woman she served in the Women's Army Core (WAC) in New York City, NY. She met Gerald La Canne after a move with her sons and foster daughter. They married on July 11, 1964 and celebrated their 53rd wedding anniversary in 2017. During her life in South Bend she worked for the South Bend Tribune for 23 years in display advertising. Hazel and Jerry enjoyed their winters in Florida for 15 years after retirement. They travelled extensively in the United States, Alaska and Hawaii. They also traveled to Mexico, Spain, and Morocco and went on numerous cruises. Hazel also enjoyed crocheting. Most of all she enjoyed spending time with her family. Hazel will be greatly missed. The family will receive guests from 3:00 pm until 7:00 pm, Sunday, November 12, 2017 in ST. JOSEPH FUNERAL HOME, 1827 E. Ireland Rd. A Funeral Service will be held at 2:00 pm Monday, November 13, 2017 in the funeral home. Burial will follow at South Lawn Cemetery. In lieu of flowers memorial contributions may be made to the American Heart Association, 6100 W. 96th St., Suite 200, Indianapolis, IN or to a charity of your choice.
