Hi,

Pat is on the right track. Joseph Horvath and Elizabeth Tengelits were married in Szerdahely, Vas County, Hungary on 7May1876. At the time, Joseph was living in Szerdahely, while Elizabeth was living in Bozsok. The record gives Joseph's birthdate as 28Jul1855, and his parents as Michael Horvath and Anna Frantsits. Elizabeth was born 30Sep1853 to Joseph Tengelits and Theresa Prisznyak. Familysearch.org has the hungarian catholic church records online up to about Oct 1895. After that, civil registration took over the record-keeping. The civil records are also on familysearch, up to various dates. For the most part, the only records that are indexed and searchable by name are church baptisms. The other records, church marriages and deaths, and civil births, marriages, and deaths are digitized and available for viewing, but you have to have some idea of the relevant date and browse through the images, just like you would scroll through microfilm. Because of this, finding death records is very cumbersome and time-consuming, especially if you have a slow internet connection. The only guidance I can give you is that when their daughter Elizabeth married Stephen Biasics in South Bend in Jan 1909, she said her father Joseph was deceased and that her mother was living in Hungary; so we know that Joseph died before that date. You could try to narrow the date down further by finding the marriage records of Elizabeth's siblings to see if Joseph is living at the time of THEIR marriage, and then browsing through the death records prior to that date. This would still be cumbersome, because the marriage records wouldn't be a whole lot easier to find, and the civil death records are one death per image, so you have to go through a lot of images to cover a relatively small time period. Finding Elizabeth's death record is even more of a nightmare, because all we know is that she died after Jan 1909. She may not have died during the time period covered by the online death records, so you could spend a whole lot of time looking for a record that, for all practical purposes, doesn't exist. Here is a link to the baptisms of the children of Joseph Horvath and Elizabeth Tengelits, as well as South Bend marriage records for two of the kids:https://www.familysearch.org/search/record/results?count=20&query=%2Bgivenname%3Ajo*%20%2Bsurname%3Ahorv*%20%2Bspouse_givenname%3Ae*%20%2Bspouse_surname%3Ateng*

Chris

Hey Jim,
I checked my records at home, Joseph Horvath and Elizabeth Tengelits had three sons who ended up in St. Joseph County, Geza, John and Stephen. Their records were no help in finding death info on parents. I started going through death records in Szerdahely, didn't find one for Joseph from 1895 to Dec 1897.

Jim,
No I don'l have any record of this family but I looked at the 4 page record attached to the bottom of this Email and it looked accurate and someone had done a detailed Job. You asked it there was a better source to find the data, not using Ancestry, and the best place now is to use "Family Search". They have updated their records and now we have marriages and deaths available in addition to births. The original microfilms are available so you can print out the original record page. I went to Family Search, logged in, and went to center tab and clicked "Search" and then "Catalog". At that page I searched by film number 701027, which had the birth records for both Szerdahely and Bozsok in Vas County. You have to click the camera icon to go directly to the films. I found the birth of Elizabeth Tengelits, wife of Joseph on 30 Sep 1853 on IMAGE 455 OF 522. That info was confusing on page 1of the tree . I next went back to microfilm #701028 which has marriages and deaths and I found the marriage of Joseph Horvath and Elizabeth Tengelits on image #226 of 397. All the relevent information is written quite clear. to find other records you need a approximate date and find the year and month by trial and error. There was minimal information on Steve Biasics however he was born in Hegyko, Sopron, County and those records are found in the records of Fertoszeplak, a larger town nearby.Hope this helps and if there is a specific question record needed, I may help if its clear whats missing.
