SOUTH BEND - Eugene P. "Soupy" Suppinger, 90, passed away at 5:30 am Thursday, April 7, 2011 in Miller's Merry Manor, New Carlisle. Gene was born on April 11, 1920, in South Bend to Vincent and Mary (Arr) Szuppinger. He was employed by Hoffman Hotel, Lentsch's Bakery, Studebaker, Ford Motor Company and AM General. Eugene was a World War II Marine veteran, a member of the Michiana Beagle Club, and loved to dance. On April 12, 1956 he married the former Joan L. Geiger, who survives. Also surviving are three daughters, Carol (Rudy) Retek and Dianne Suppinger both of South Bend and Patricia (Charles) Van Acker of Cassopolis, MI; 7 grandchildren, Kyle Retek, Kelly Kissel, Angela Reffo, Robyn Rogers, LeAnne Suppinger, Charles Van Acker and Tammy Hanson; 9 great-grandchildren, Katie, Jacob, Reese, Cassidy, Bryce, Olivia, Noah, Camden, and Chelsey; 1 great-great grandchild, Ayden; and two brothers, Albert (Dorothy) Suppinger and John (Kathryn) Suppinger both of South Bend. Gene was preceded in death by a sister Mary Kertes. The Suppinger family would like to thank the staffs of both Miller's Merry Manor and Harbor Light Hospice for the wonderful care for Gene. A Mass of Christian Burial will be celebrated at 10 am Monday, April 11, 2011 in Our Lady of Hungary Church. Burial with military honors will follow in Highland Cemetery. Family and friends may call from 2-6 Sunday in the Zahoran Funeral Home, 1826 Kemble Avenue where a rosary will be recited at 2 pm. Memorial contributions may be made to the Alzheimer's Association .
