SOUTH BEND - Earl Paul Ely, age 94, of South Bend, passed away Tuesday, January 8, 2013 at Memorial Hospital in South Bend. Earl was born October 10, 1918 in Fort Wayne, Indiana to the late Kenneth and Emma (Ponsot) Ely. On September 12, 1947, he married Irene Verbeke. Irene preceded him in death, passing away on May 1, 2005. Surviving are his children, Kurt (Brenda) Ely of Kettering, Ohio, and Deborah (Steve) Jackson of Granger, Indiana; and his stepdaughter, Barbara Dooms Rems of Granger, Indiana and Summerfield, Florida. Also surviving are five grandchildren, Kellie (Steve) Long, Kevin (Michelle) Rems, Scott Jackson, Grant Ely, and Brandon Ely, along with two great-grandchildren, Alexis and Jacob Rems. Earl is also survived by his sister, Ruth (Homer) Guerra of New York City, New York. He was preceded in death by his sisters, Helen Pelz and Betty Lampert. There will be no visitation or services. Chapel Hill Funeral Home, Osceola, Indiana, is handling arrangements. Earl served in the U.S. Army during WW II before being honorably discharged. He was employed as a Plant Layout Engineer for over 30 years at the Bendix Corporation in South Bend prior to his retirement. Earl enjoyed spending his spare time ice fishing, and freshwater fishing, both on Lake Michigan and in Ohio with his son on Lake Erie.
