SOUTH BEND - Darrell E. Merrill, 56, of South Bend, IN passed away at 6:15 p.m. Sunday, September 7, 2014 at Memorial Hospital. He was born on October 27, 1957 in South Bend, IN to William E. and Shirley Ann (Huffman) Merrill. On September 25, 1982 in South Bend, IN he was united in marriage to the former Pamala Kalamaja. Darrell is survived by his wife, Pamala Kalamaja of South Bend, IN; two sisters, Dawn E. Merrill of South Bend, IN and Debra E. (Tim) Wolfinger of South Bend, IN; brother, Daniel E. (Diane Caldwell) Merrill of Bremen, IN and several nieces and nephews. He was preceded in death by his parents, William and Shirley Merrill; brother, Dennis E. Merrill and niece, Beth Ann Merrill. Darrell was a lifelong resident. He graduated from Riley High School in 1975. He loved his pets and animals. Darrell's career was everything to him. He starting working as an executive chef at Captain Alexander's Moonraker in South Bend, IN, then moved to Boca Raton, FL, working at Boca West Resort, then Inverrary Hilton and Palm Air Spa, Fort Lauderdale. He worked at Executive Inn and Louisville Country Club, Louisville, KY, then Indianapolis Holiday Inn Pyramids, Taste of New York, Marten House Hotel, Glacier Park Lodge in Glacier, MT and Plymouth Country Club and Swan Lake Resort. He was a lifetime member of NRA and an avid fisherman. His greatest accomplishment was mentoring several aspiring chefs. There will be no services. Friends may visit with the family from 5:00-8:00 p.m. Friday, September 12, 2013 at the Palmer Funeral Home-Guisinger Chapel, 3718 S. Michigan St., South Bend, IN. Contributions in memory of Darrell E. Merrill may be offered to Pet Refuge, 4626 S. Burnett Drive, South Bend, IN 46614. Online condolences may be sent to the family at www.palmerfuneralhomes.com.
