South Bend - Sylvester William Cashen, Jr., 91, passed away at 7:17pm on Sunday, March 12, 2023, in the Maples at Waterford Crossing in Goshen. Sylvester was born on April 25, 1931, in Mishawaka, IN to the late Sylvester and Vera (Vida) Cashen, Sr. Sylvester was also preceded by his wife, Mara Jane (Peterson) Cashen; sisters, Mary Ellen Cashen and Theresa Cashen; and brothers, John Cashen, Tom Cashen, and Jim Cashen. Sylvester is survived by his children, Peggy Barghahn, Steve (Tammie) Cashen, and Michael (Karla) Cashen; grandchildren, Jennifer Cashen Williams, Elizabeth Cashen Ward, Michael J. Cashen, Jenna Barghahn, Kate Keil, Andy Cashen, and Melissa Cashen Williams; and many great-grandchildren. Sylvester honorably served his country in the United States Army. He was a parishioner at St. Matthew Cathedral where he was an usher for over 50 years. He worked as a meat cutter at the University of Notre Dame before retiring in 1985. A Mass of Christian Burial will be celebrated at 11:00 a.m. on Thursday, March 16, 2023, in the Cathedral of St. Matthew where family and friends may begin to gather at 10:00 a.m. Burial will follow at Highland Cemetery with Military Honors.
