John E. “Jack” Regan
June 24, 1940 - February 13, 2023
John E. “Jack” Regan (82) passed away on Friday, February 13, 2023 in Notre Dame, IN surrounded by his loving family. He was born June 24, 1940 to the late Robert M and Patsy (Fay) Regan in Mankato, MN where he was raised through high school. He was a 1962 graduate of the University of Notre Dame with a BA in accounting, and in 1967 earned a JD degree from William Mitchell College of Law in St. Paul, MN. He obtained his CPA certificate in 1965 and was admitted to practice law in Minnesota in 1967. Jack married his high school sweetheart, Carol Ann Lucke, on September 8, 1962 in St. Paul. They had two daughters, Shawn Marie and Shannon Jean, and one son, John Brendan Regan. Following graduation from Notre Dame, Jack practiced as a certified public accountant in Minneapolis, MN for five years while attending evening law school. Then he returned to Mankato in 1967, where he practiced law for the next 37 years. After moving to the Michiana area in 2004, Jack continued his Minnesota law practice on a part-time basis as counsel to his law firm for another nine years, eventually retiring in 2013. Jack’s favorite leisure time activities included travel, golf, spectator sports and attending concerts and theatre with family members whenever possible. Jack was usually involved with his parish church in some capacity, such as trustee, parish council, lector, or extraordinary minister, both back in Minnesota and more recently here at the Notre Dame Basilica. He also served as a tour guide in the Basilica, a volunteer at Holy Cross House, and a mentor at Darden School for many years. In addition to Carol, his loving wife of 60 years and best friend, Jack is survived by his daughter Shawn (Brett) Parker, his son Brendan (Shelley) Regan, his son-in-law Laurence Weithers, and six grandchildren: Nicholas (Claire) Parker, Shannon Claire Parker, Kevin (Mary Kate) Weithers, Daniel Weithers, Brian Weithers and Christopher Parker, two sisters: Fay Regan and Molly Regan (Conrad Osborne), and a brother Tom (Deb) Regan, as well as four great-grandchildren. He was preceded in death by his beloved daughter, Shannon in 2007, and his brothers Mike Regan and Pat Regan. His first love was his family, dear wife, children and grandchildren, with whom he spent many memorable vacation trips, often involving spring training baseball season in Florida. During his Mankato years, Jack was engaged in numerous civic and charitable activities, including his election to the City Council at age 28, and serving on the City Charter Commission for many years. He was a founding trustee of the Schola Foundation, which provides financial support for the area Catholic school system. He served on the Immanuel-St Joseph Hospital board for ten years, and as a longtime trustee of St. Joseph’s parish. He was also active with the Serra Club and the Jaycees.
