Joseph P. Tomkiewicz, 79, of South Bend, passed away peacefully surrounded by his family on Tuesday, March 13, 2018, at Memorial Hospital. Joseph was born February 3, 1939, in South Bend, to the late Mary (Klockowski) and Joseph Tomkiewicz. He was also preceded in death by his son, Gregory Tomkiewicz in 2016, and a sister, Virginia Adams. On December 2, 1989 in South Bend, Joseph married the love of his life, Bernadette “Bea” (Mikolajczak), who survives. Also surviving are two daughters, Laura Tomkiewicz (Tom Kowalski) of South Bend, and Melissa Kush (Bob) of Cassopolis, MI, step-son, Michael Kowalewski (Lori) of Granger, nine grandchildren, Casey Warner (Shane), Saige Tomkiewicz, Maggie Smith, Christopher, Zac, and Molly Kush, Gavin, Rebeca, and Andrew Kowalewski, one sister, Delores Cebulski, two brothers, George Tomkiewicz (Connie), and Dan Tomkiewicz (Paula), and many nieces and nephews. Joe retired from Bosch after forty nine years, where he made many lifelong friends. Joe was a member of Christ the King Catholic Church, American Legion Post 50, and Bendix Retirement Club. He proudly served his country with the U S Army. He loved spending time with his grandchildren, whether it was watching them play sports or watching their favorite sport teams. Joe was an avid Notre Dame fan and was excited to see the Cubs win the World Series. He especially loved taking his dog “Lola” for car rides to Mc D’s for his daily coffee. Joe will be missed by all who knew and loved him dearly. A Mass of Christian Burial will be celebrated 11:00 a.m. Monday, March 19th, at Christ the King Catholic Church, 52473 S R 933 North, South Bend, with Fr. Michael Palmer C.S.C. officiating. Burial will follow at Saint Joseph Polish Roman Catholic Cemetery. Visitation will be held from 2:00 until 6:00 p.m. Sunday, March 18th, at Welsheimer Family Funeral Home North, 17033 Cleveland Road, South Bend, where a parish rosary will be recited at 5:30 p.m. In lieu of flowers, contributions may be made to St. Jude Children’s Hospital, P O Box 1000, Dept. #142, Memphis, TN, 38101-9908, where envelopes will be provided at the funeral home.
