Dominic Cherrone , 71, formerly of South Bend, Ind., died in Elkhart General Hospital Saturday. He was born July 2, 1925, in South Bend, and lived here most of his life until moving to Elkhart, Ind., four years ago. He enlisted in the Army Air Corps during World War II and participated in 58 missions, flying both B17s and B52s. His decorations included the Bronze Star, the Silver Star, Purple Heart, the Victoria Cross from England, and various other medals. He is survived by his children, Linda and James Young of Norfolk, Va., Andrew J., Daniel and Christine, Christopher E. and Marilyn, and Martin D. and Jaime, all of South Bend, Steven J. and Janet of Bremen, Ind., and Michael and Heather of Elkhart; 21 grandchildren; six great-grandchildren; a sister, Doris Sciba of South Bend; and a brother, Fred Cherrone of Milwaukee, Wis. Friends may call from 2 to 4 and 6 to 8 p.m. today at Guisinger Colonial Chapel Funeral Home, where a rosary will be said at 4 p.m. Services will be at 10 a.m. Wednesday at St. Jude's Catholic Church in South Bend. Burial with military services will be in Southlawn Cemetery. Published in the South Bend Tribune; Jan. 7, 1997.
