Joseph S. Witkowski, 87, of South Bend, Indiana passed away on Tuesday, April 17, 2018 in Springer Health Care. He was born on March 9, 1931 in South Bend, Indiana, to the late John and Harriet (Wieczorek) Witkowski. Joseph is survived by very special cousins, Joann Miller of Bristol, Indiana, Chet (Sylvia) Wieczorek of South Bend, Indiana, Tinia Lichnerowicz of South Bend, Indiana, and Joe (Cheri) Lichnerowicz of South Bend, Indiana. He is also survived by two special friends, Carol Roberts of Plymouth, Indiana and Dr. David Halperin of South Bend, Indiana. He attended St. Stanislaus Grade School. In 1950, he graduated from Central High School. Joseph was an Army veteran of the Korean War Conflict. He provided 45 years of service as a Patient Care Assistant at Memorial Hospital, where he retired in 1996. He was a member of Harvest House, retirees of Memorial Hospital, and St. John's and St. Casimir Senior Citizen's groups. Joseph was a big supporter of Notre Dame and he loved to travel and be around people. Visitation will be on Sunday, April 22, 2018 in the Kaniewski Funeral Home, 3545 N. Bendix Dr., South Bend, Indiana from 2:00 until 6:00 p.m., where a rosary will be prayed at 3:00 p.m. A Mass of Christian Burial will be celebrated on Monday, April 23, 2018 in St. Joseph Catholic Church, 225 South Mill St., Mishawaka, Indiana at 11:00 a.m. Burial will follow in Cedar Grove Cemetery. In lieu of flowers, memorial contributions may be made to St. Joseph Catholic Church, Mishawaka or St. Stanislaus Catholic Church, South Bend in Joseph’s honor.
