John E. Bartoszek, 92, of South Bend passed away Monday, December 25, 2017. John was born on March 23, 1925 in South Bend to Zigmund and Sophie (Wegenke) Bartoszek who preceded him in death. John was also preceded in death by his loving wife of 64 years, Helen (Kil) Bartoszek in 2013; their son, Kenneth J. Bartoszek; sisters, Loretta Catalano, Leona McKnight, Lucille Hogan; and brother, Paul Bartoszek. He is survived by 6 children, Diane (Brian) Poole, Denise (Jim) Suddes, Keith Bartoszek, Kevin Bartoszek, Karl Bartoszek, and Doreen (Bruce) Diveley; 8 grandchildren, Nathan (Alecia) Poole, Shauna (Chris) Bromby, Patrick (Rachel) Suddes, Sean (Sophia) Suddes, Molly Suddes, Jonathon (Molly) Diveley, Donavon (Dana) Diveley, and Cevan Bartoszek; six great-grandchildren, Vanessa, Halena & Tily Poole, Iain & Raina Bromby, Letty Diveley, plus 2 more expected in 2018, baby Lillianna born to Donavon Diveley in March and a baby to Jonathon Diveley in the summer; a sister, Patricia (Bartoszek) Zurat, and many nieces and nephews. John proudly served his country in the United States Navy during WWII as a Seaman on the USS Santee (CVE29) from 1943 - 1946. John then worked for Hoosier Spring as an Inspector until his retirement. He loved to play ping pong on his lunch hour. John was a Parishioner of Holy Cross Catholic Church and a lifetime member of the American Legion Post 357, who will be assisting with Military Honors. Visitation for John will be 12-2 pm, Saturday, January 13, 2018 in St. Joseph Funeral Home, 824 S. Mayflower Rd. South Bend. A Funeral Service will begin at 2:00pm in the funeral home Chapel. Military Honors will follow at St. Joseph Cemetery, weather permitting. If not, Honors will take place in the Chapel. Condolences for the family may be made at www.sjfh.net.
