[N9707] Katherine Ratkiewicz
Jan. 21, 1954 - June 12, 2014

SOUTH BEND - Katherine "Kathy" Ratkiewicz, 60, residing in South Bend, IN, passed away at IU Simon Cancer Center, Indianapolis, IN. She was born on January 21, 1954, in Freeport, TX, to Leslie Harold and Dorothy (Vincent) Edgerton. On February 9, 1980, at Southlawn United Methodist Church, South Bend, IN, she married John A Ratkiewicz, who survives. Along with her loving husband John, Kathy is survived by two daughters, Emily Ratkiewicz of North Liberty and Sarah Ratkiewicz of South Bend; and five sons, Jacob (Laura) Ratkiewicz of Sunnyvale, CA, Andrew Ratkiewicz of Knoxville, TN, Nathan Ratkiewicz, Samuel Ratkiewicz and Daniel Ratkiewicz, all of South Bend. Also surviving are her mother, Dorothy Edgerton of South Bend; her sister, Ann (Neal) Mort of Oswego, IN; and two brothers, Les (Mary) Edgerton of Ft. Wayne and John Edgerton of Bremen. Her father, Leslie Edgerton, and one sister, Joan Bowen, both preceded her in death. Kathy worked as a pediatric nurse for nearly twenty years at Memorial Hospital, South Bend. She left work in 1993 to become a stay-at-home mom to her children, whom she also home schooled. Her children credit their academic success to the individualized education they received while at home. Kathy loved spending time with her family, whether through family vacations, Scrabble tournaments, Boy Scout camping trips with Sam, or the many extracurricular activities in which Daniel loves to participate. She leaves behind a family who will always be grateful for the love, attention and support she provided. Kathy was also very active in the Down Syndrome Family Support and Advocacy Group of Michiana for the majority of the past 16 years after her youngest son was born with Down Syndrome. She served as the president for many years and had a role in many of the group's outreach programs, including organizing resource fairs and the annual DS support walk. Over those years she made a positive difference in the lives of many local families. Burial has taken place at Southlawn Cemetery, South Bend, IN. A service to celebrate her life will take place on Friday, June 20, 2014, at the Michiana Down Syndrome Resource Center, located at Town & Country Shopping Center, 2444 Miracle Lane, Mishawaka, IN, from 4:30 6:30 pm. Palmer Funeral Home-River Park is assisting the family with arrangements. Expressions of sympathy to the family may be offered to the Down Syndrome Family Support and Advocacy Group of Michiana (DSFSAG), 51201 Old Cottage Drive, Granger, IN 46530.
