SOUTH BEND - Richard D. Van Paris who was born November 11, 1923, in South Bend, to Levan and Irene Van Paris, passed away on August 13, 2011, in St. Joseph Regional Medical Center. On February 24, 1945, at Ft. Benning, GA, he married Salomea (Sally) Kil of South Bend, who preceded him in death on January 20, 1984. Also preceding him in death were his sister, Patricia Rybak, and brother, Levan Van Paris. He is survived by his brother, Jack of River Forest, Illinois; three children: Susan (Sylvester) Klusczinski of North Liberty; Richard II of Indianapolis; and Levan (Judy) of South Bend, 7 grandchildren and 6 great-grandchildren. Richard graduated from Washington High School in 1941 and enrolled in the University of Notre Dame in the spring of 1941. He served in the US Army from 1943 - 1946 attaining the rank of First Lieutenant.He returned to Notre Dame in 1946 and graduated in 1948. He retired from the Indian State Highway, LaPorte, Indiana as District Administrative Manager & Chief Financial Officer in 1989. Six years later, he was employed at the University of Notre Dame where he served as Front Desk Supervisor at Rolfs Sports Recreation Center for 14 years, retiring on January 21, 2009. Richard was a member of the Knights of Columbus Council #553. Viewing will be from 2:00 pm to 8:00 pm on Thursday, August 18, 2011, at St. Joseph Funeral Home, 824 S. Mayflower Road, South Bend. A Rosary will be prayed at 4:00 pm. He was a member of Corpus Christi Church where a Mass of Christian Burial will be celebrated at 10:00 am on Friday, August 19, 2011. Burial will follow in St. Joseph Cemetery. For those who are unable to attend the funeral liturgy, condolences for the family may be made at www.sjfh.net.
