Josephine H. Chmielewski, 92, of Ironwood Health and Rehabilitation Center, formerly of Hartzer Street, South Bend, Ind., passed away of natural causes at 7:40 p.m. Saturday, March 27, in the Rehabilitation Center.
Josephine was born on Dec. 22, 1911, in South Bend, to the late Joseph and Stella (Kitkowski) Chmielewski. She was also preceded in death by her sisters, Marie Chmielewski and Martha Juhas; and by brothers, Stanley and Leonard Chmielewski.
She is survived by three sisters, Sophie Rzeszewski, Alice Janowiak and Virginia Jelinski, all of South Bend; a sister-in-law, Mary Chmielewski of South Bend; six nephews and seven nieces; as well as many great-nieces and nephews.
Ms. Chmielewski retired from Gerber Uniform Company and formerly worked at Wilson Brothers. She was an excellent seamstress and sewed outfits for her nephews and nieces, as well as many formal and bridesmaid dresses for her nieces and great-nieces.
Josephine was a member of St. Stanislaus B&M Catholic Church and was involved in many of the church organizations, including the St. Stan's Choir, Apostleship of Prayer Society, Bethany Ladies and Harvest House.
Visitation will be from 2 to 8 p.m. today, March 31, in the Kaniewski Funeral Home, 3545 N. Bendix Drive, South Bend, where a parish Rosary will be recited at 4 p.m. A Mass of Christian Burial will take place at 11:30 a.m. Thursday, April 1, in St. Stanislaus B&M Church, 415 N. Brookfield St., South Bend, with burial to follow at St. Joseph Cemetery, South Bend.
