SOUTH BEND - John J. Pishnoff, 93, passed away at 8:00 pm, Friday, October 4, 2013 in the Sanctuary at Holy Cross. John was born December 27, 1919 in South Bend to the late Simon and Katherine Pishnoff. John was married to Helen Kotnik for 62 years before she preceded him in death. John is also preceded in death by a sister, Margaret (Leo) Botka, sister, Stella (Wally) Botka, and a brother, Henry (Ethel) Pishnoff. Survivors include his daughter, Rose Ann Housam of South Bend, IN, son, Richard J (Mary Ann) Pishnoff of Osceola, IN, grandson, Gerald Housam of Chicago, granddaughter, Tara Housam of South Bend, IN, grandson, Matthew Housam of Chicago, brother, Edward (Nancy) Pishnoff of South Bend, IN, great-grandson, Brayden Ruth of South Bend, IN and many nieces and nephews.
John was a lifetime member of St. Adalbert Catholic Church. He was active as a Notre Dame Usher for over 47 years and was given a Golden Pass for achievement. He was also active in UAW local 5 and the Council Oak Caring School. John was a civilian Conservation Officer during the depression. He honorably served in the Army and had achieved the rank of Sergeant. John was injured in the Philippines. He would cook 300 lbs. of sausage for Dyngus Day every year at American Legion Post 357, where he was an active member for over 50 years and was part of the American Legion Post 357 military funeral honor squad and a life member of the DAV, Civilian Conservation Organization and Harvest House. John painted fire hydrants and received a certificate from Mayor Lueke. John enjoyed wood carving, arts and crafts projects. He loved dancing with his wife and vacationing from coast to coast. He will also be remembered for his 2 1/2 lb. tomatoes. John worked at Studebaker's until it closed. He had also worked at the Blue Ribbon Pie Company and he retired from A.M. General after 27 years. He was a life member of Fitness USA. He enjoyed cutting hair and doing odd jobs for everyone. The family would like to thank the staff at Sanctuary at Holy Cross and the Center for Hospice Care for their exceptional care of our dad. In lieu of flowers, memorials in John's name may be directed to St. Adalbert's Catholic Church, Ameican Legion Post 357, and the Center for Hospice Care. Visitation for John will be 4:00 pm to 8:00 pm, Tuesday, October 8, 2013, in ST. JOSEPH FUNERAL HOME, 824 S. Mayflower Rd. A Mass of Christian Burial will be celebrated at 10 a.m. on Wednesday, October 9, 2013 in St. Adalbert Catholic Church, 2505 W. Grace St., South Bend, IN 46619.
