SOUTH BEND - Evalyn Liszewski, 96, of the Sanctuary of St. Paul's, 3602 South Ironwood, South Bend, passed away on December 16, 2017. Evalyn was born on October 31, 1921 in South Bend to the late Joseph & Janina Kasznia. In October of 1946, Evalyn married Alfred Liszewski, and they were married for 56 years. Alfred passed away on March 23, 2003. She was preceded in death by her sisters, Irene Janiszewski and Helen Niespodziany; brother, Walter Kasznia; and son-in-law, Greg Ball. Evalyn is survived by five children, Sharon (Miles) Lombard of Davison, MI, Mark (Judy) Liszewski of South Bend, IN, Elizabeth Ball of St. Joseph, MI, Patricia (Edward) Patzer of Edwardsburg, MI, and Amy (Tom) Ferguson of South Bend, IN; eight grandchildren, Summer (David) Galvis, Sally (Brett) Calland, Jared Lombard, Andy (Courtney) Liszewski, Rory (Heather) Ball, Bridget Kolnitys, Mitchell Patzer, and Caitlin Ferguson; nine great-grandchildren; and her sister, Pearl Czarnecki. Evalyn graduated from New Carlisle High School, and St. John Hospital School of Nursing in 1942. She served her country in the Navy Nurse Corps from 1943-1946, stationed in Pearl Harbor and Guam, and was discharged in March 1946 as Lieutenant JG. Evalyn received the Esprit de Corps award from Admiral Nimitz. After returning home after the war, she did private duty nursing in the South Bend area for many years and retired from Carlisle Nursing Home in 1988. Evalyn belonged to the St. John the Baptist Church from the day they formed the parish and was a member of the Rosary Society and Golden Clusters until her move to St. Paul's. She earned the Top Hat award as a volunteer for St. Vincent DePaul Society. She was a charter member of the Women's Memorial - Washington, DC. Evalyn lived at the Sanctuary at St. Paul's for 13 years, loving to volunteer. She had a strong faith and family values. Evalyn loved spending time with her grandchildren and playing card games. Evalyn passed on a legacy of grace and humility to her family.
The family members appreciate the wonderful care she received from Dr. Gail English and Dr. Ahmed Latief. Visitation for Evalyn will be held from 4:00 pm to 8:00 pm on Tuesday, December 19, 2017 in ST. JOSEPH FUNERAL HOME, 1827 E. Ireland Rd., South Bend, IN, with a Rosary to be prayed at 4:30 pm. A Mass of Christian Burial will be held at 10:00 am, Wednesday, December 20, 2017 in Sanctuary of St. Paul's, 3602 S. Ironwood Dr., South Bend, IN, with visitation 1 hour prior to the service at St. Paul's. Burial will follow at St. Joseph Cemetery.
