SOUTH BEND - Wilfried R. “Wil” Vaerewyck, 74, of South Bend passed away in his home at 9:45 a.m. on Sunday, December 17, 2017.Wil was born on January 5, 1943, in Beveren Waas, Belgium, the son of Rene C. and Josee M. (DeDobbelaer) Vaerewyck, who predeceased him. The family came to the United States when he was four, settling first in Mishawaka before making their home in South Bend. Wil was a 1962 graduate of John Adams High School and worked for the South Bend Community School Corporation for over 30 years. On January 20, 1968, Wil married Sharlene Kerr and she survives. He is also survived by their daughter, Jennifer (Joe) Vermillion of Terre Haute; his grandson, Joey Vermillion of Terre Haute; sister, Agnes Rosebrook of Mishawaka; brother, Michael (Wanda) Vaerewyck of Edwardsburg; sister-inlaw, Sandra Woltman of Mishawaka; and brother-in-law, Steve (Lois) Kerr of Mishawaka; as well as several nieces and nephews. He was also preceded in death by a brother, George Vaerewyck, and two brothers-in-law, Kenneth Woltman and James Rosebrook. Wil was an avid Notre Dame fan where he and Sharlene were longtime season ticket holders for Notre Dame women's basketball games, and was a member of S' Wheaton Rescues and Adoption Inc., Kansas City, MO. Services are at Christ the King Catholic Church (52473 Indiana State Road 933, South Bend, Indiana, 46637) Thursday, December 21, 2017, with visitation at 10:00 a.m. and Mass of Catholic Burial at 11:00 a.m. with Fr. Michael Belinsky C.S.C. officiating.The family wishes to extend their deepest thanks to the Center for Hospice Care with special thanks to Nicole, Danielle, Mary and Jenny. The past 13 months would not have been possible without your gracious assistance and loving care.
